The Lost Movies

What we have here is a list of films that seem to have fallen off the face of the earth. As far as I know, they aren't currently available in any non-celluloid format (VHS, Beta, DVD, laser disc, 3/4" tape) NTSC, Secam or PAL, not even bootleg.

As you can see, in the six years of this list's existence many of these titles have surfaced in one way or another. But as the lost is found, up pops a fresh crop of elusive cinematic curios that beg to be unearthed. So stay tuned for new seeds and the harvests they may reap.

All gratitude to everybody who's hooked me up, especially Mike White of Cashiers du Cinemart. If you have any info on a title or would like to suggest a lost movie lemme know. Thanks in advance to all who get in touch.

The Ultimate Lost Movie

Of course I mean "lost" in the abstract sense as Alejandro Jodorowsky's epic adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune never materialized. In development from 1974 to '77, the film was to have featured Orson Welles, David Carradine (hot off the Kung Fu series), Gloria Swanson, Amanda Lear and Salvador Dali as a mad emperor who sits upon a toilet throne. With art design by H.R. Giger and special effects by Dark Star's Dan O'Bannon who both soon after worked together on Alien. Music was to be by Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and French prog rockers Magma. One can only imagine.

Special Bulletin!

"SON OF HEATWAVE" 1960s/70s This one's a real mystery. I was recently contacted by someone about an independent film made in the late sixties/early seventies that toured the college campus circuit. He hadn't seen it himself and couldn't remember the exact title or any other info but he does recall the basic plot as described to him by folks fortunate enough to catch it. Jesus returns to earth and performs various miracles (tearing up a speeding ticket; giving a young woman large breasts, leaving everyone with an ecstatic smile on their face). Later he's confronted in the ghetto with comments like "If you really loved those kids, you'd turn them white!" After granting their wish he's immediately chased down the street by an angry mob and escapes by running across a swimming pool as the mob falls in the water. Eventually, a bunch of rednecks nail Jesus to a giant peace symbol and set him on fire. In the end, a bruised and bloodied Jesus grabs a machine gun and declares, "OK, no more Mr. Nice Guy!" If this film sounds in any way familiar please, please, please drop me a line. I'm still not sure if rumors of this film's existence aren't just the results of a mass halluncination.

Update! A recent contact informed me that in the seventies, Canadian parliment tried to ban a film, sounding very similar to the one described above, by passing legislation (a Private Member's Bill). Ring any bells?
